"The enterprise of the first William Shipley was equal to his wealth, and the town (Wilmington) began to grow rapidly after his removal to it. In 1736 lots were bought by Joseph Steel, yeoman, of Maryland; John McArthur, weaver; Thomas Tatnall, of Ridley; William Levis, Joseph Peters, Abraham Skinner, mariner; Lucas Stidham, Enoch Lewis, cordwainer; Hans Rudolph, Henry Heath, George Howell, storekeeper; David Bush, merchant; Alexander Hooge, carpenter; Thomas Downing, inn-keeper; Thomas Broom.”

In 1793 he entertained nearly a hundred Philadelphians during the yellow fever epidemic. Monsieur Hammond, a wealthy Frenchman, bought the Way mansion and resided in it until 1802. Jacob Broom, one of the farmers of the Constitution of the United States, was its next owner, and died there. His son, Jacob M. Broom, was a Representative in Congress. Notes for Rachel Maria Broom:

EDWARD SCHWARZ GRANT Cincinnati, The Queen City, Volume III, 1912 Pages 223-224 Transcribed by Linda Thompson, Wabash, IN:

Edward Schwarz Grant, who from the outset of his business career has been an exporter and shipper of pork products at Cincinnati, was born in Baltimore, Maryland, March 4, 1857, and comes of an ancestry honorable and distinguished. The first members of the Grant family in America came from Scotland in 1652. They were supporters of the house of Stuart during the Cromwellian wars and were with the defeated army of King James at the battle of Worcester. They settled in Boston and resided there continuously until early in the nineteenth century, when Joseph P. Grant removed to Baltimore. The family has always been intensely American in spirit and interest and for the past two hundred and fifty years has been connected with all of the important events which have left their impress upon the history of the nation. In colonial days one of the great-grandfathers of Edward S. Grant assisted in caring for the Scottish clan Grant sent to the new world to aid in the wars against King Philip, the Indian chief. Every member of this regiment of five hundred men belonged to the Grant family, as the old Scottish clans formed in families. Four brothers of the name came from Scotland together in 1652, when the family was permanently planted on American soil, and from one of these brothers the family of President Grant descended and from another came the branch to which the Cincinnati Grants belong. The coat of arms of the family is an emblazoned shield with three burning bushes or torches above the words "Stand fast" below. The burning bushes represent the mountain signals in Scotland during times of war.

Moses Grant, the great-grandfather of Edward S. Grant, was one of the party who threw the tea overboard in Boston harbor prior to the Revolution. It was his son Joseph P. Grant who was the first of the name to leave Boston and, removing to Baltimore, Maryland, was there married to Miss Maria Broom, a daughter of Jacob Broom, who was a signer of the constitution of the United States and a member of the first three national congresses. Their son James B. Grant, father of E. S. Grant, was born in Baltimore and, having arrived at years of maturity married Amelia Schwarz, daughter of Dr. Gustave Schwarz, who was born in Saxony and was a surgeon in the Prussian division of Wellington's army at the battle of Waterloo. Her grandfather on her mother's side was in the Pennsylvania Flying Camp during the revolution and was wounded in the battle of Long Island.

Born in Baltimore, Edward S. Grant was brought by his parents to Cincinnati in his childhood days and supplemented his early education by study in St. Xavier College of this city, but entered business circles before his graduation. His commercial record is well known to his fellow townsmen. He has by close application, persistent energy and watchfulness over the trade built up an extensive business as an exporter and shipper of pork products.

On the 16th of October, 1878, at Covington, Kentucky, Mr. Grant was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth L. Greet, a daughter of James A. Greer, of that city. She is a representative of an old Maryland family on her mother's side and her paternal grandfather was born in northern Ireland early in the last century and settled in Kentucky, where he became prominent in business circles. Mr. and Mrs. Grant have become parent of four sons and a daughter. Harry L. Grant, residing in Chicago, was married June 3, 1911, to Miss Margaret Scribner, of New York. James Pierce Grant, residing in Montclair, New Jersey, married Miss Drue Underwood, of Covington, Kentucky, and they have two lovely little daughters. Hetty Willis is mentioned as a daughter of Abraham in his father James' will. However, no other record for her, or another daughter, Eliza, has been found after that. In the 1800 census, the record shows one daughter above 10 years old, so it is probable that Eliza had died before 1800.

HISTORY OF CLARION COUNTY

edited by A. J. Davis, 1887

CHAPTER LXXI   HISTORY OF SLIGO BOROUGH.

The territory embraced within the present limits of Sligo borough was settled at an early date, but by whom is not definitely known to the writer. The Craigs settled here early, and Richard Reynolds opened a store where A. B. Miller's house now stands. The furnace, being built in 1845, made the furnace bank a lively village. The furnace used charcoal. It shipped its metal at Callensburg in boats on the Clarion. William Lyon, J. P. Lyon, and other gentlemen of wealth owned the furnace. The company had a store in connection with the furnace and also several farms.

About 1860 or 1861, the Western Union Telegraph Company established an office at this point, and in 1873 the Sligo Branch Railroad was built. During war times, Sligo being a telegraph station, was a central point for gathering news from the field, and many an excited crowd assembled about the store and office in those days.

The Lyon family lived in lordly style, and their houses and grounds, now owned by J. B. Miller, yet remain as monuments of their once proud state. Compared with the usual dwellings of those days, these houses were palaces, while their coachman and servants in attendance gave a southerly air to the surroundings, and even the employees of the store and offices affected to be like their employers. The Lyon family were a genteel people. The workmen respected them as such, and when D. E. Lyon, the oldest son of J. P Lyon, went into the army with Captain Ewing's company, the boys who went with him and their friends felt that a barrier between wealth and labor had been torn away.

The improvement of a new street through the property, which is independent of the baseball enterprise, has been going on for nearly a month and the contractors in charge of that job have permission to dump on the land owned by Barney Dreyfuss, so that much progress has been made towards filling the big hole at the Joncaire street end of the new park, but the machinery which started yesterday will do the work much quicker. The shovel began on the Boquet street side and in two weeks will be out of the way of the Nicola Building Co., which has the contract for the erection of the stands.

In addition to the grading machinery, there was set up yesterday all of the machinery needed for the concrete work and tomorrow the building of the massive retaining wall from Joncaire street north to Boquet street will be under way. The permit for this part of the improvement was granted Thursday.

With the graders at work on the new ball park, the street makers busy, a large force employed by the city on improvements in Schenley Park, and skilled workmen erecting the University of Pittsburgh, the new Memorial Hall and additions to the Carnegie Technical schools, Oakland was the busiest section of the city yesterday. The ball park improvement alone furnished work for more than 100 men.

The Nicola Building Co. is erecting a temporary office for the use of the employees and the engineers. This building is not on the ball park property and will not be removed until the entire improvement is completed. This building will be finished this week."
